11 Plus Entrance Exam Preparation

What Are the 11+ Entrance Exams?

In Torbay, the 11+ entrance exams are used by local grammar schools- including Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, Torquay Girls’ Grammar School, Churston Ferrers Grammar School, and The Spires College selective stream to assess children’s suitability for a grammar school education.

The multiple-choice exams in English and mathematics are taken at the start of Year 6 with the results announced by the end of October. A passing score does not guarantee a place at a school. Candidates must also submit a Common Application Form by the end of October to apply for a school place. These tests are designed to identify children who demonstrate strong reasoning ability, problem-solving skills, and academic potential.

Structure: The exam consists of two multiple-choice papers, each lasting approximately 45-50 minutes.

English: Tests include comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Mathematics: Tests cover a range of topics including problem-solving, logical reasoning, number operation, algebra and geometry.

Preparing for the 11+ Entrance Exam

The 11+ entrance exam is a key step for many children hoping to attend a grammar or selective school. Preparing for the tests helps pupils become familiar with question styles, develop effective exam techniques, and build confidence ahead of test day.

Why Tutoring Can Make a Difference

While schools do a fantastic job teaching the curriculum, the 11+ exam is quite specific in its structure and timing. Tutoring offers your child the opportunity to:

Gain familiarity with exam-style questions reducing anxiety and building confidence.

Receive targeted support focusing on individual learning needs and filling any knowledge gaps.

Develop exam technique and timing skills helping children manage their time effectively during tests.

Build confidence and resilience encouraging a positive mindset that lasts beyond the exam.

How I Support Your Child

With over 20 years of teaching experience and a strong understanding of how children learn best, I offer tailored 1:1 and small group 11+ sessions designed to:

Identify strengths and gaps through initial assessments.

Provide structured practice with past-style papers and mock exams.

Boost confidence so your child feels prepared, calm, and ready for success.

Whether your child needs a confidence boost, help mastering tricky topics, or full exam preparation, my sessions are designed to make learning engaging, supportive, and effective.

How Do I Know If My Child Is Suitable to Take the 11+?

Deciding whether your child should take the 11+ can feel like a big decision. Generally, children who enjoy a challenge, work independently, and show strength in reading, reasoning, and problem-solving may be well suited to the exam.

However, academic ability is only part of the picture- motivation, confidence, and resilience also play an important role. Through an initial assessment and ongoing observation, I can help identify your child’s strengths and areas for development, offering honest and supportive feedback about their readiness for the 11+.

My aim is to ensure that every child feels encouraged and capable, whatever path they take next.
